| PENNSYLVANIA - PHILADELPHIA - November 11, 1987
So, in November of 1987, I decided to take my first train trip. At least it was the first train experience I can remember. I was headed down to Florida to visit my good friend Joy, who was a pal in college and and whom I had known back in Kansas City. This was the perfect time to go for a visit. I was in Chicago and it was the dead of Winter. You can imagine what it was like. All I could imagine was how warm Florida was going to be. This journey was going to happen in 4 stages, 2 trains going and 2 trains coming back. On the initial part of the trip, I would take the Broadway Limited to Philadelphia and then wait to board the next train heading South, the Silver Meteor. The Broadway Limited passed through a large section of rolling Pennsylvania farmland, which one was able to glimpse out the windows. From time to time there would be hints of major industry. Stopping in Philadelphia turned out to be an unexpected bonus. There was plenty of time to see the downtown sights. Having never been to this famous city, there were many historic landmarks to take in. The city turned out to be a flavorful mix of both new and old fashions. It had several new skyscrapers as well as a number of elegant buildings from the early days of America. Two older structures of note were Independence Hall and City Hall. |
