CALIFORNIA - SAN FRANCISCO - January 26, 1989
San Francisco has some pretty superb architecture, which is a reflection of its artistically refined culture. Certainly, this region has restrictions it must live within, but where creativity can emerge, it frequently does. It was fun to wander the city and see examples of great design. To this day, the Marriot hotel continues to be one of my all-time favorite buildings. The TransAmerica pyramid is a unique solution that I have not seen duplicated, except, perhaps by Chicago's John Hancock Building, a distant cousin. In closing, it seemed that San Francisco had a lot going for it. It was an extremely interesting and diverse place. The downsides, of course, were the over-crowding and the earthquakes. But, the excellent food might just make up for all of that. At least that was my assessment after just a couple of days. |
