CALIFORNIA - LOS ANGELES - January 28, 1989

My thoughtful cousin Judy came to retreive me from LA's Union Station and took me back to her comfortible home on the Palos Verdes hilltop. The next morning, she, her son Jim, and Jim's wife Peggy gave me a tour of the surrounding region.

First, we drove back down Palos Verdes to take a look at Los Angeles Harbor and the mile-long Vincent Thomas Bridge that spans it. The harbor is a major port that services cruise liners, cargo ships and some military vessels. Along its edge, on Terminal Island, one can see the many hard-working cranes that load and unload containers. In nearby San Pedro, Cabrillo Marina takes care of the smaller craft. To see all of this was quite fascinating.

For rest of the tour, we circled the Palos Verdes Pennisula and looked at various landmarks. On the NorthWest side of the hill are the Palos Verdes cliffs, which overlook the LA beach suburbs and lower Santa Monica Bay. After seeing them, we swung around to the South side and visited the Korean Friendship Bell pavillion.

Concluding our adventure, we headed back up the hill to visit one of Judy's friends. In the process, we got a pretty decent view of San Pedro and its harbor facilities.
