AMTRAK - SOUTHWEST CHIEF - January 29, 1989

Now it was time for a different train to get back to Chicago, Amtrak's Southwest Chief. Again, this would be a multi-day trip, taking us through Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois. We left Los Angeles in the late afternoon, so we didn't get to see any interesting scenery until the next morning.

As we crossed the New Mexico dessert, we were treated to a narrated tour, regarding the Indians who had once lived here, by a knowledgeable guide in the lounge car. Then it was time for a break.

Albuquerque was a major stop for the Southwest Chief. While it halted to take on fuel, water, supplies and a fresh crew, we passengers were free to wander the platform. Outside the tiny station, native Americans were selling jewelry on tables and blankets. Nearby were small trucks carrying snack foods and souvenirs.

Moving again, the high Rockies loomed beside us. We made our way over them and crossed the railway's highest point at the Raton Pass tunnel (7588 ft.) Once we had cleared our ears, the gradual descent made for an relaxing ride. Another night came and went. Eventually I was returned to my starting point, Chicago.
