AMTRAK - CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR - January 25, 1989

Continuing through Utah during the night, the sun once again greeted us in chilly Neveda. Looking about, the environment had transformed from rocky ledges to an undulating ocean of trees and freshly fallen snow. Still at a high elevation, clouds clung to the mountainsides, stranded by the uprisen Earth. This made for a heavenly scene as we toured the upper reaches of the state.

All of this was well and good, but it was the third day of the trip. Although the Superliner we were riding had a variety of facilities, the one thing it lacked (at least for coach passengers) was a shower. I was beginning to feel a bit grimey and would welcome a good cleaning-up.

Fortunately, the end of this journey lay only a few hours ahead. While we waited, the onboard announcer educated the train regarding the misfortunes of the Donner party as we weaved our way through Donner Pass.
