CALIFORNIA - SAN FRANCISCO - January 26, 1990

In the Fall of 1989, San Francisco experienced a severe earthquake during the 3rd game of the World Series. Major road and bridge damage occured causing a number of injuries. Candlestick Park swayed during the incident, leaving Mark to comment that they wanted to rename the stadium "Wiggley Field".

Before I left for home, my gracious host wanted to take me around to see some of the damage. Most of San Francisco seemed unaffected, but there were a few buildings that obviously had been weakened. Here and there, in various parts of the city, structures had been condemned and were boarded up to prevent entry.

Mark also told me how highway support pillars appeared relatively undamaged, until they were broken open for inspection. Inside, the rebar was twisted and mangled.

Fortunately, though, this beautiful and friendly city mostly remained the same, bouncing back from whatever damage was inflicted upon it.
