CALIFORNIA - SAN DIEGO - July 04, 2003

It all started on the 4th of July. I was standing in a long line in front of Kono's, my favorite breakfast spot, where the portions are large and the prices are small. There is always a sizable gathering in front of this little hole-in-the-wall because the fare is delicious and the staff consistently greets everyone by name. In recent days, dining at Kono's had been a problem because I somehow managed to get a case of sciatica in my right leg, which previously made the wait in line an agonizing prospect. However, by this point in time, things were on the mend and I was only slightly tender.

Kono's sits close to the ocean, right behind the popular Crystal Pier, a pier that features a hotel made up of numerous tiny cottages. It lies along a highly-traveled bike trail that stretches for several miles along the beach. On this day the weather was good and there were plenty of people about, ready to take part in the day's festivities. Aside from the usual eccentric cast of characters milling about, there was one man who had a small remote-controlled vehicle that spouted lots of tiny bubbles. It zoomed about and amused the crowd until we all made it inside to eat.
