IOWA - DES MOINES - July 17, 2003

I was driving towards my first photo assignment in Wisconsin when an exciting idea suddenly flashed through my mind. I could stop in Des Moines, Iowa and see the Andy Goldsworthy exhibit at the Art Center.

For those of you who don't know, I spent several months at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla helping to guard the Andy Goldsworthy exhibit there. The exhibit in question was part of a three-site project that included works in Des Moines, Iowa and Purchase, New York. The La Jolla exhibit included detailed images from the other two sites and now was my opportunity to see one of these up close.

The Des Moines site included a central "cairn", a large stone egg (or pine-cone), and three massive rectangular stone structures surrounding it with egg-shaped holes cut into them. The idea here is that the stone blocks are the sources for the three egg-shaped cairns that reside across the country.

There are also several independent cairnes floating around the country, one of which is the "prairie cairn" that was built in a field outside of Des Moines near the Interstate. I managed a quick look at it, too.
