This newsletter and previous ones are available on-line as web pages at: Please pass this newsletter along to other James Burke enthusiasts you know about, who may be unaware of its existence. DISCLAIMER: The information contained in this newsletter comes from a wide variety of sources and is selected for publication solely by the newsletter's editor/creator Tom Palmer. It is the editor's intent to address the common interests of the individuals who appreciate Mr. Burke's public offerings and to supply them with information that relates to any topic Mr. Burke has covered. Welcome to the 11th issue of the James Burke Fan Companion news update. It pleases me greatly to see that people are continuing to sign up for this newsletter and that there are subscribers coming from outside the United States. I wish I had more power to bring Mr. Burke's messages to an international audience. This month's issue is a little lighter than usual due to my recent trip to Illinois. Below I am still searching for links that relate to the subject matter in the Connections 2 series of programs. Next month we will probably start on Connections 3. Also, I was fortunate to find a large number of new books on the shelves to bring to your attention. I know that most of you really love the Connections programs and Mr. Burke's various books. Please let me suggest that some of these items would make wonderful Christmas presents. Why not expose your family members and friends to more of Mr. Burke's stimulating information? To order, see the links at the bottom section of this newsletter.
BURKE NEWS I have received several quick notes from Mr. Burke recently explaining that he is deeply involved in editing the manuscript for his new book. Evidently, this, and several speaking engagements are taking up most of his time.
--------- James is conducting a small speaking tour which covers late October and early November. Hopefully some of you will be able to see him in person, which is always a delightful experience. 11/02/02: West Chester University - West Chester, PA 11/04/02: Linfield College - Portland, OR 11/14/02: Visa International EU

--------- Mr. Burke does have an informational website in place now that begins to describe the Knowledge Web project. You can visit it at: The K-Web site appears to have been recently updated with more information and a demo. Go have a look if you are new to the project or have not been to the site in a while. As always, Mr. Burke would appreciate help from Graduate Students and Academics in researching some of the 2200 biographies for the online Knowledge Web project. If you know anyone who would like to volunteer their time to this fantastic project, please send an e-mail to the K-Web team leader, Patrick McKercher at:
TV SCHEDULE (UPCOMING) Well, the Connections series seems to be an almost permanent fixture on the Science Channel. Let's Hope it stays that way and they keep broadcasting these wonderful episodes forever. You can see Connections 2 & 3 on The (Discovery) Science Channel through November!
Connections 2 - The Science Channel - Now thru at least Nov. 30, 2002
Connections 3 - The Science Channel - Now thru at least Nov. 27, 2002
Note: I do not know if either Connections series will be played in proper sequence or if the eventual final episodes scheduled will be the actual final episode for each series. Therefore, if you are planning to videotape these programs, don't necessarily wait for the beginning episodes to cycle through.
WAYS TO COMMUNICATE Below are the links that James Burke fans can use to communicate with one another. These are starting to be used now on a more regular basis. Let's see if we can increase the traffic. alt.fan.james-burke groups.yahoo.com/group/connectionswithjamesburke/
WEBMASTER NEWS I have just returned from an exciting 10-day trip to Chicago, the Windy City. During my stay I encountered a number of interesting people and took note of various items they exposed me to. Here are some fun links that my trip produced:
Vacationing in a major city? CityPass might be helpful.
For paranormal entertainment: Neal Tobin, magician and necromancer
For great children's music: Ralph's World
For somewhat unusual children's music, check out They Might Be Giant's new album "No!"
Got pet's? Consider "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food".
Interested in underground culture reading materials? Try Quimby's Bookstore.
LINKS OF INTEREST TO BURKE FANS This month's search engine finds are a continuation of the inventions, discoveries and other topics mentioned in the Connections 2 programs. These were found with Google. I would like to comment that it is still pretty difficult to find meaningful information of the kind that Mr. Burke presents, or that which might be found in history books, textbooks or encyclopedias. The web still has a long way to go. I can only assume that publishers want to keep this information in a form that has to be sold. Of course, I can't blame them, but it certainly makes it hard for anyone doing research via the internet. Libraries are still your best bet.
