AMTRAK - SOUTHWEST CHIEF - April 07, 2004

Time for another train ride, this time to California. My 8th photo assignment was taking me out West, to several areas near the "sin cities", Laughlin and Las Vegas. But first I would be going to San Diego where I would then rent a car to drive to Nevada.

Typically, I ride the Southwest Chief to California two or three times a year. Nothing really eventful happened on this particular trip, as sometimes has happened in the past. (On occasion we hit things, or drunk people get removed from the train.) No, it was just nice scenery and the clickity-clak of the rails. When not sleeping or looking out the window, I listened to an audio book, "The DaVinci Code", which was recorded on 13 compact discs. Do you have any idea how long that took to listen to? Almost the whole trip. Usually there is a good movie to watch in the lounge car at night. I think it was "School of Rock" this time if I am not mistaken.

As per our schedule, we stopped for a long break in Albuquerque where I always get off and buy something to eat and drink from the burrito truck. I have done this often enough now that the proprietor recognizes me. After about an hour, having finished off my chicken burrito, our train continued on its way to the Los Angeles station. There I took the connecting train, a cushy Pacific Surfliner, down to sunny San Diego.
