ARIZONA - LAKE HAVASU - April 17, 2004

It just so happened that my Bullhead City assignment ended on a Friday, so I had the weekend to try and find something to do. That was not going to be a problem, because I had contacted my friend Don in Lake Havasu about the possibility of getting together. Don, who I used to know in Chicago, was eager for a visit, so I scurried south a few miles to Lake Havasu City where Don and I were briefly reunited.

Initially, Don took me out on the lake in his boat for a tour. It was there that Lake Havasu's unique tourist attraction was first brought into view. Evidently, way back in 1968, Lake Havasu founder Robert McCulloch purchased the actual London Bridge and had it shipped to America where it was reassembled in Arizona stone by stone. To begin with, the bridge was built over dry land near the shore of the lake. Later a canal was dug, bringing a full flow of water under the famous bridge.

Another, slightly more infamous place, was pointed out to me by Don later in this adventure. He sped me over to the far side of the lake to an area known as Copper Canyon. This part of Lake Havasu is under the jurisdiction of an Indian reservation and loads of college-aged boaters congregate in the narrow channel to have a party. This is one of the locales where the popular "Girls Gone Wild" videos are shot. On this weekend, however, most of the wild girls and boys stayed at home.
