CALIFORNIA - SAN DIEGO - April 10, 2004

Near San Diego's exquisite Santa Fe train station you will find San Diego Bay and a popular segment of the city's waterfront. The shoreline nearest the downtown business district features numerous piers and boat docks that are home to a variety of vessels. Here you will find aircraft carriers and giant cruise ships as well and tour boats and historic sailing craft. This is one of many places in greater San Diego that visiting tourists and local inhabitants eagerly flock to.

Returning to this area after a moderate absence, I discovered that some community group had erected a collection of highly unusual statues along the maritime walkway. Carrots and surfboards and little gnomes up in trees. What were these? A set of 30 artistic works referred to as "Urban Trees", which will evidently be on display for the term of a year.

A favorite ship on permanent display is the Star of India. In its hold is the city's Maritime Museum, a highly-interesting encapsulation of ancient nautical life. This iron-hulled sea-going ship always has its magnificent sails unfurled and is a real treat to climb all over. Nearby, there are often other retired sailing vessels moored. On this day, the HMS Surprise was along side. The sign near its bow informed sightseers that it was a ship featured in the recent film "Master and Commander".
