| ILLINOIS - GLENWOOD (S. CHICAGO SUBURBS) - June 30, 2004
My brilliant plan to avoid the congestion of I-80 backfired a bit when I lost track of Highway 30 in Dyer, Indiana at the state line. Using the map in a general sense, I drove around looking for a major cross street I could use to get back on track. Before long I found myself in Glenwood, extremely close to a gigantic mining pit situated right alongside I-80. The Thornton Quarry as it is known is 1.5 miles long and 325 feet deep. Again, gigantic. I have taken note of it at differing times in the past as I was coming or going to Chicago. And, of course, there is a company currently engaged in liberating various rocks and minerals from this quarry. That is what I happened to go by as I was getting my bearings. The rock processing and handling equipment at this facility made for great abstract photographs. The machinery is not unlike the rural grain elevators I took pictures of earlier in my trip. Finally reuniting with good old Intertstate 80, I proceeded west to Geneseo, Moline and Wolcott. |
