| ILLINOIS - GENESEO - June 18, 2004
Geneseo was a real treat. I enjoyed this small town from the moment I got there. Upon arriving, I immediately came across a celebration in the town square. They were having an ice cream social as well as crowning some sort of festival queen. The square, which included a small stage, had a vast array of older citizens spread out in front of the stage in their lawn chairs. A musician was singing and talking to the crowd and everyone was having a good time. After finding a motel, I cruised around and witnessed a bit of junior league softball being played by a collection of youngsters. The next day, I met with my subjects and they took me to various spots around town to take pictures. We shot photos of downtown Geneseo and the rows of Victorian homes that line its streets. We photographed its schools and churches. We examined the local country club and its nearby riverside bike trail. And we visited a local subdivision where they were constructing new homes. The next day, we drove out into the surrounding countryside where I captured a Harley Davidson dealership and some farms. One surprising scene my host pointed out was a collection of colorful combines that had been used in a recent demolition derby. Driving back, we also discovered a classic barn scene where the owners had hung their clothes out to dry. Had I stayed another day, I could have witnessed the annual Fathers Day pancake breakfast that many pilots fly into at the local landing strip. When I passed through Geneseo a week and a half later on my way back home, the town was engaged in yet another celebration, the annual arts and crafts festival. I stopped for about an hour and checked out the numerous vendors. Across the street from the park, a group of old red and green tractors had been put on display. They tell me the rest of the Summer is going to be packed with similar events and activies. |
