| INDIANA - VALPARAISO - June 30, 2004
There has always been a big problem driving west along I-80 / I-94 towards Chicago. As one approaches the Illinois-Indiana border, the pace slows down to a crawl, or even a stop. It might take you as much as an hour to drive the dozen or so miles you have to go to get to where traffic breaks up and flows freely once again. To avoid this situation, I tried a new tactic and diverted southward to Highway 30 before the conjestion started to take place. The idea was that this road might be a less heavily traveled one and the map indicated it would eventually reconnect with the Interstate I wanted to end up on. Almost anything was going to be quicker than staying on the old route I had been taking in the past. So, my experiment began. The first town of significance I came to was Valparaiso. It had some interesting elements, particularly a store of some kind, shaped in the form of a dome. Very "1960's". Driving down the road a few more blocks, I came to something far more seductive, Valparaiso University. VU had a library and a chapel with very nice lines. The "Chapel of the Resurrection" church featured a roof with a folded-paper appearance and its segmented walls fell right in line with the creases. It wasn't until I entered the chapel, out of sheer curiousity, that I truely came to appreciate its structure. Making up most of the large cylindrical attrium, was a huge stained-glass masterpiece. Stretching almost 100 feet from floor to ceiling, this colorful light-catcher thrilled and inspired the eye. It made a fantastic backdrop to the stage where the sermons were given. Standing there, not wanting to leave, I felt quite lucky to have happened across such a magnificent diamond in the rough. As I exited the university, I wondered what other dazzling treats might cross my path as my journey back home continued. |
