| IOWA - I-29 & I-80 - June 17, 2004
As I have mentioned before, the interstate highways always offer up the same reoccuring images. The ones in Iowa were no exception. The rest stops along the Iowa interstates are pretty nice, as rest stops go. A number of them have the same pleasing architectural design, which usually incorporates some sort of artwork, and some others feature a large teepee formed from a series of white concrete beams. At one Iowa rest stop I pulled up to find a great-looking old streamlined car. It was a deep greenish-blue in color and had obviously been carefully rebuilt and customized. In a typical scene, several travelers had gathered round the shiny vehicle as the owner lifted the hood and examined the engine. This thing was a real beauty and it no doubt received favorable attention wherever it went. Along the road, you will often find an assortment of whimsical and interesting objects. On this day I came across a power-generating windmill at a small town truckstop, and down the street, there stood a bright yellow water tower with a smiley face painted on the side. The one thing that has caught my attention in recent trips down I-80 is an adult bookstore and a nearby billboard. The business in question is known as the Adult Super Store and that title was once featured on the approaching sign. The familiar black, white and yellow billboard has been recently altered, however. It now reads "Jesus, the Adult Super Savior". This parody amuses me every time I now go by. |
