KANSAS - NEAR FT. SCOTT - April 26, 2004

I have a friend, Gary, who once lived in Nashville and wrote country music songs for a living. Gary, aka "Scott Summers", now lives in Kansas and is trying to re-establish his country music career, this time as a featured artist. As a part of this process, Gary has put together a demo album of his latest songs to give to radio station DJs for airplay.

While I was between trips, I went down to Ft. Scott and took pictures of Gary in various locations for potential use on his album. We drove around the rural countryside where I photographed him on porchswings and old gravel roads and in rundown abandoned schoolhouses. We even found a small diner to capture him in. It was a fun afternoon that took us past many of the spots we had adventures in during our younger days. Now we generally just set back and talk about such times.

One interesting story about Gary. A while back he started getting royalty checks from a musician who had evidently recorded one of his old songs. The artist was a French woman known as Alice Deejay, who had a hit called "Better Off Alone", which must have used the lyrics from Gary's sad country song of the same name.
