KANSAS - LAWRENCE - May 27, 2004

In late May, my friends Valery and Bob had a trip planned where they would be visiting Europe. A few years ago they had played host to a delightful young exchange student from Sweden named Molly. It was now time for Molly to graduate from high school and Val and Bob had been invited to Stockholm to take part in the celebration. That being the case, Val and Bob needed someone to watch over their house while they were away and asked me if I would humbly oblige. This also meant keeping an eye on the two kids, Anna and Ryan, until they were ready to fly over a few days later.

At one point, Ryan informed us that his band was going to be taped by a local television station for a show that featured regional musicians. I asked Anna if she would like to go see her brother play and the following day I drove her and her friend Sarah over to Lawrence to watch the Buffalo Saints be videotaped.

It had been decided that the band would perform in the street directly in front of Ryan's college apartment, so as the time drew near, instruments were drug out onto the street and barricades placed at the two ends of the block. Eventually, the video crew and producer arrived and all of the appropriate equipment was set up into position. For the next couple of hours, Tom and Ryan, the Buffalo Saints, put on a small concert for a handful of neighbors and friends as the television technicians recorded the scene.

Two days later, Anna and Ryan were winging their way over to London leaving me with the house, the dog and two sleepy cats.
