| MICHIGAN - BATTLE CREEK - February 29, 2004
As I rolled along I-80 towards Plymouth, a sign caught my eye that said "Battle Creek". Well, being a former member of the advertising biz, how could I not stop? I mean, Kelloggs, Corn Flakes, Tony The Tiger, the Fruit Loops bird. This was potentially "advertising icon central". When would I have another chance to find out? So, I took the exit and cruised through the small town of Battle Creek, Michigan. There wasn't a whole lot there, but the place was tidy and well-kept. A number of buildings had "Kelloggs" engraved on them somewhere, not that they were part of the Kellogg's cereal company or anything. I assume this is because the Kelloggs family is very influential here, as well as philanthropic. Anyway, I followed the appropriate signs and came to a facility called "Kelloggs Cereal City", which I suppose is where the public can get a "taste" of what the Kelloggs company is all about without having to visit the actual factory, wherever that might be. Indeed, this was a fascinating public relations center, with giftshop included, where you could learn all about your favorite breakfast cereal and how it is made. Evidently, the tour through the building takes a couple of hours (which I did not have) so I was unable to go through the learning process. It looked very interesting, however, and I plan to make time for it next time I am in the neighborhood. Instead, I wound up buying a Toucan Sam toy to take back home and got back on the road so I could reach my real destination before dark. Strangely enough, right before I left on this trip, there was a segment on the Travel Channel about Cereal City. I'm glad I got to go there. |
