NEVADA - ON THE ROAD - April 18, 2004

On Sunday morning I had to bid my gracious host Don farewell and head to Las Vegas where I could download all of the pictures I had recently shot. Along the way. I stopped to photograph some really colorful desert plants that occupied a short section of the highway. After that, it was back on the road to Vegas.

I only stayed in Las Vegas long enough to burn a few CDs at one of the Sony Image Stations in a local Kinkos. That took roughly 4 hours and when I was finished, I got a sandwich, reviewed my map and pointed the PT Cruiser in the driection of Pahrump, my next Nevada destination. The route I took out of Las Vegas managed to take me past a few blocks of "the Strip", which was alive and active as ever.

Regarding Pahrump, this is a small community just over some the mountains west of Vegas. It is not far from the so-called "Area 51" and Groom Lake where some people suspect there is secret government research going on with UFOs. Pahrump is the domain of one special gentleman, whose job it is to discuss such fantastic topics, radio personality Art Bell. Although I did not come across his compound, Art Bell has broadcast his eerie late-night radio show from Pahrump for a number of years. Now it seems that he has curtailed that a bit, only to monopolize the local radio frequencies of station KNYE.

Another strange aspect of Pahrump was that although upon first inspection, the town seemed to be made up of a ragtag collection unremarkable housing, it did contain some of the most impressive residences I have photographed over the course of the last year.

Exiting Pahrump, I bravely took a backdoor shortcut out of the city that someone had recommended. This brought me along a lonely stretch of highway that cut across the dry, barren desert. It finally merged with Interstate15 at Baker, California, a spot devoted to refueling hot and hungry travelers. Baker's special feature was a towering thermometer that let you know exactly the state of affairs you happened to be in. From there it was smooth sailing back to the coastal metropolis of Los Angeles.
