NORTH CAROLINA - CHARLOTTE - March 07, 2004

One of the things you'll find in downtown Charlotte is art. There are art museums, art galleries and public art on the streets. One intersection features a sculpture on every corner, plus a large golden disc sitting on edge off to the side in a courtyard. In fact, all of downtown radiates culture of one kind or another. It is interesting to note that "Sue" the Tyranosaurus Rex from Chicago's Field Museum was on display inside Charlotte's science and nature museum, Discovery Place, which is also downtown.

While all of this is new, I also found some culture that was not so new in the middle of Charlotte. Tucked away behind a major building was an old cemetery, aptly named the Old Settler's Cemetery. It's current occupants range from those buried in 1776 up until 1884. It's been around a long time and the headstones show it. This graveyard took up a complete city block and was fun to roam around in.
