| PENNSYLVANIA - ON THE ROAD - March 03, 2004
Traveling the turnpikes and Interstate freeways of America, one tends to witness the same reoccuring objects, unusual cars and a disproportionate number of tunnels and girder bridges. Pennsylvania was by no means an exception. Inevitably, in each travel oasis parking lot, there sat an old streamlined show car, waiting patiently to be hauled or driven to the nearest gathering of vintage car enthusiasts. In this case, a collector was delivering the body of an old restored roadster to some destination. Also, there was what appeared to be a racetrack pace car of some kind. The only difference was that this swift beauty had "Racing with Jesus" written on its door. I can only imagine what that was about. Pennsylvania, being a hilly place, contained a tunnel or two in addition to the standard steel train bridges and giant erector-set river-spanners. The two holes in the hillside picture at left are one entrance to Pennsylvania's 1.2 mile-long Allegheny Tunnel. |
