SOUTH DAKOTA - SIOUX FALLS - June 16, 2004

Overnight, Sioux Falls received a record rainfall amount, dumping over 7 inches of rain into the area over a 6-hour period. This had the effect of transforming the city's waterfalls from a beautiful phenomenon of nature into a rushing, gushing monster that everyone had to come see.

Early in the morning I heard people in the hotel talking about it, so, before my scheduled shoot, I drove down to the park to see for myself what was going on. Gone was the perfectly balanced scene from yesterday. In its place was a raging flow of brown water covering all of the riverbed that had previously been exposed. The trough between the shallow plateaus had overflowed and flooded the entire basin. Water was running over the falls in such volume as to make it appear that there were no falls at all, only a slight drop in the path of the current. Under the downstream bridge, the river constricted and was forcefully channeled through a rocky bend and once again released into a wider container.

The rest of the day, townspeople came to gaze on the rare spectacle Mother Nature had provided and I felt fortunate to be among them.
