VIRGINIA - RICHMOND - March 06, 2004

Passing through Virginia on I-95 I came across Richmond and decided to stop for some lunch. While there, the city appeared worthy of some limited exploration, so I went at it. Initially, I came across the modern convention / visitors center. There, I was given a map of the area's local attractions and proceeded to go have a peek.

Richmond has a number of historic features to look at, but as usual, my wandering eyes got the better of the tour map on several ocassions. As I was driving over to see Monument Avenue, I was stopped at Monroe Park by several fascinating old buildings along its edge. First there was this Arabic-looking temple, a building formering occupied by the Shriners, but now called The Landmark Theater. Close to that was the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, a really captivating old Catholic church. It was beautifully designed and rather potent for its diminuative size.

In another part of town I came across Hollywood Cemetery, which features a gigantic stone pyramid. This object is the 90-foot-tall Confederate Monument, around which are supposedly buried 18,000 Confederate soldiers. Hollywood Cemetery also contains the remains of several past Presidents, James Monroe, John Tyler and Jefferson Davis. This unique graveyard contained a variety of original headstones and was difficult to say farewell to.
