| FLORIDA - COCOA BEACH - January 18, 2006
Before leaving my breakfast partners, Rick and Cindy elaborated on a must-see item I would encounter on my drive up the coast: the Ron Jon Surf Shop. On my way to Melbourne, I had noticed numbers of billboards for this establishment. They were begining to rival those for Wall Drug, Rock City and South of the Border. I figured, though, that Ron Jon's would just be another little surf shop setting along side the highway. Nothing could be farther from the truth. As Rick and Cindy promised, the Ron Jon complex was magnificent, a large brightly-colored fortress that was impossible to miss. It stood out from its surroundings and screamed "this is Florida" at you. And so that no one would miss the point, the front lawn of Ron Jon's also featured several concrete statues of surfers in different variations. Added to this was a woody and marquee displaying a cute bikini-clad beach babe. I could only imagine what was inside. |
