FLORIDA - TITUSVILLE / CAPE CANAVERAL - January 18, 2006

After today's scrubbed launch of the New Horizons spacecraft, I headed North towards Daytona. It wasn't long before I came across a small park that would have been perfect to observe this, or any other, launch from. There were several people there, each with high-powered telephoto lenses or binoculars, casually chatting and taking occasional peeks at the buildings across the channel.

From this vantage point, one could clearly see the missle and its four accompanying lightning rods. Also, the Vertical Assembly Building and space shuttle launchpad were plainly in sight. This would no doubt be the place to be when anything blasted off from the cape. I gave the group a friendly hello and peered through their lenses. It was then back to the trail.

Driving up Highway 1, I noticed a number of citrus orchards. Prior to this, I thought perhaps that Florida had a growing season, much like the Midwest. But it was plain to see that orange and lemon crops were grown here all year long. No wonder Florida has such a reputation for producing these mouth-watering treats.
