FLORIDA - FLAGLER BEACH - January 19, 2006

One last familiar spot to pass by was the Flagler Beach pier. This was a totally obvious structure due to the fact that the words "Flagler Beach" appeared in gigantic letters on both sides of it's A-framed roof. There was no missing it.

I parked the car along side the road nearby where I could take a walkway down to the water. Looking over the railing, I stopped to amuse myself with the activities of a man with a metal detector. He was methodically pacing the sand in an attempt to find meaning objects. Next to him stood a collection of several hundred birds. As the man swept through his pattern, he would intrude on the birds' space causing the leading edge of the flock to creep or fly to the side. The man kept doing this as the birds were slowly herded down the shore.

Eventually, I placed myself at the other end of the flock to see what would happen. Sensing us both, the flock of gulls simply compacted tighter.
