| FLORIDA - SAINT AUGUSTINE - January 19, 2006
There are a number of historic attractions in St. Augustine. Two of the most accessible ones are the St. Augustine lighthouse and old Spanish fort. I always attempt to stop at these sites and pay them a brief visit whenever I whiz through the area. This time was no exception. The lighthouse dates back to the 1870's. Today, the restored structure is still active and mostly serves as a historical monument and museum. The Castillo de San Marcos was originally a Spanish outpost from the late 1600's and is now part of the National Park Service. I particularly enjoy this fortification's pointy design and heavy metal armament. And like so many ancient sites, the Castillo has changed ownership and function a number of times. |
