INDIANA - EVANSVILLE - January 25, 2006
It was the final evening of my current road trip and I had one last motel to track down. I decided to stop for the night in Evansville, IN, which seemed to leave me with a comfortible drive the next day to reach Kansas City. As I exited and drove down the street towards some lodging, I noticed a curious sight. Someone had placed series of small white crosses in an open area along the highway. The first thing that sprang to mind was the rememberence plot someone had erected in Texas near Waco to remind people of the tragic deaths at the compound. Given recent events, I supposed this must be a patriot's accounting of all the fine soldiers we have lost in Iraq due to the war. But that was not it. After stopping to examine the memorial and reading its sign, I discovered this was an ethical statement about abortion. Evidently a nearby farmer had devoted an entire field to this project. The ground was littered with thousands of tiny white wooden crosses, each counting an unborn baby whose life had been cut short that day. It was certainly a powerful message, one worth condiering. |
