| IOWA - IOWA CITY - April 21, 2006
The tornado that passed through Iowa City was a relatively rare occurance. It dipped down into the business district and part of the U. of I. campus. In our exploration, Aaron and I traced its trail back towards the city. First, we started with the campus housing district. A number of 2-story apartments had their roofs blown away, including the Alpha Chi Omega sorority house which displayed considerable damage. Walking downtown, Aaron pointed out a number of small businesses that had not fared well. These included the Happy Joe's pizzeria and another nearby establishment whose facades had collapsed. The most spectacular sight was the gaping hole that used to be the roof and front wall of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. It looked like a meteor had hit it. A very sad scene, indeed. Especially for the congregation. The odd thing about what happened here was how the tornado seemed to randomly hit some buildings and not others. The effect it produced seemed to be very concentrated and isolated. |
