KENTUCKY - FORT KNOX - January 25, 2006

Seeing a sign for Fort Knox, I just couldn't resist having a look. It holds an irresistible charm. It's an American icon.

Driving up Highway 31, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Would the depository be in the distance, perhaps up some long winding road? Would you even be able to see it at all? Well, all of a sudden, there it was, right next to the highway. Plain as day. It was so close that I was by it in an instant.

The next thing up the road, however, was something else that I wanted to see... the Patton Museum. Again, I was unsure as to what was inside, but I was confident that it must be interesting. So, I pulled in and had a look. The lawn was filled with tanks on one side and regiment memorial markers on the other.

Inside was a gift shop and an entrance to the exhibits. I was overjoyed to learn that entry was free. I waltzed up the corridor and was greeted by several initial items. First was a model of the Fort Knox gold depository. This was the actual model used in the movie "Goldfinger". Then, they had a temporary display relating to Elvis presley's military service. In another room, there was memorabilia from General Patton, his personal effects and several vehicles. After that it was on to the tanks.
