MISSOURI - KANSAS CITY - July 14, 2007

The Kansas City Roller Warriors is actually a collection of four smaller teams: Black-Eye Susans, Dreadnought Dorothys, The Knockouts, and Victory Vixens. Tonight, these fast and furious ladies would be pairing off against each other, instead of battling an out-of-town rival.

The play schedule is broken up into four alternating matches. First, the Black-Eye Susans would battle the Dreadnought Dorothys. Then the Knockouts would go up against the Victory Vixens. After a brief half-time display, the cycle repeated itself.

It was great fun to watch. As I took pictures of the pack speeding by, I slowly realized what the game was all about. The skaters with the stars on their helmets were the "jammers". It was their job to lap the pack and score points. Everyone else tried to prevent this from happening.

During the competition, the agile jammers would go whizzing by and the rest of the players would block, bump and go tumbling from time to time. The contest was mostly good-natured, and produced a minimum of predictable injuries.
