FLORIDA - GULF BLVD. - February 02, 2008

According to Myron, the Gulf shore has its own independent economy, one that is mostly supported by tourism. The beach communities that hug the coast are seperated from the mainland by an inland waterway and are connected by a single highway known as Gulf Boulevard.

Our mission was to drive from one end of the barrier islands to the other. We started with Pasadena and made our way through a collection of eight or nine tiny towns.

The further along we drove, the more buildings increased in height and gave off an upscale appearance. Myron talked about the height restrictions many jurisdictions have which are designed to reduce overcrowding and maintain the coastline's historic feel.

By the time we reached Belleair Beach at the end of Sand Key, it was clear that the developers had assumed control. The final segment of Gulf Boulevard was lined by a row of expensive highrise condo complexes.
