FLORIDA - CLEARWATER & TARPON SPRINGS - February 02, 2008

The final leg of our journey took us to Clearwater proper. Mimicing our previous trip, we set out to inspect another iconic hotel. The target today was Clearwater's magnificent white wooden resort, the Biltmore.

Pulling up to the entrance, we noticed some much-needed repair taking place on the exterior. Virtually all of the roof's beautiful forest green shingles were gone and paint was peeling from many locations. Defects aside, however, the hotel was a substantial structure.

Giving ourselves a brief tour, the facility revealed its grand scale and exquisite styling. It was definitely designed to impress.

Following our visit, we cruised through downtown Clearwater. There, Myron pointed out the semi-finished Scientology headquarters.

With another hour of daylight to burn, we decided to continue on to Tarpon Springs and see its famous tourist gallery.

Evidently in earlier days, a number of Greek families settled this area. With them, in tow, came traditional Greek culture and industry. Following years of dedicated labor, Tarpon Springs now claims to be the sponge fishing capitol of the world.

The sponge district makes for a fun visit. Fishing boats line the canal. Their catches call out to inquisitive shoppers from scattered baskets. For hungry patrons, there is no shortage of tasty Greek dishes and pastries to consume. Everywhere, buyers an array of memorable objects to take home and display.
