FLORIDA - TAMPA - February 19, 2008 Early on I had told my neighbor Myron that I was interested in photographing the Gasparilla Knight Parade. Being his typically generous and resourceful self, Myron offered to let me join him at a private event poised next to the crazy celebration. The party took place at the offices of a well-known law firm in Ybor City. (Myron takes care of their floral arrangements.) I had attended a gathering here once before, so I was familiar with the grounds and a few of the people. Around five o'clock, guests began to accumulate in the fenced-off parking lot. As musicians set the mood with steel drum melodies, caterers arranged the bar and prepared a tempting dinner buffet. Attendees seemed eager to leave work behind. Having a good time was now the top priority. Staff members and their friends began to fill their cups and nibble on a pile of succulent crab claws. I remembered these juicy treats from my previous visit. I rushed to grab a few before they were gone. Temporarily satisfied, Myron next introduced me to a few of the people in the crowd. Eventually dinner was served and a long line formed behind the buffet. Also around this time, the Knight Parade started and could be seen passing by in the distance. It was getting dark and I knew if I were going to manage a few photos, I'd better hurry and down my meal with dispatch. In the parking lot, an elevated reviewing stand had been erected and was now being taken advantage of by the happy invitees. Floats went by and countless beads were lofted into the air. Necklaces made their way into the flailing arms of passersby. Others fell to the ground and were rapidly collected. An easy haul. Myron soon came up to me and asked if I were inclined to go outside the gate. A few moments later we were making our way down the street to catch a glimpse of the unfolding spectacle our evening offered. |
