| ARIZONA - SEDONA - August 06, 2002
Another place my friends have been swooning over for years is Red Rocks and Sedona. I made a point to learn where these destinations were and gave myself a little time to finally go see them. As it turns out, the Red Rocks area is quite large, so big in fact that it might take a person 4 or 5 days to get a good look at it all. Unfortunately, I didn't have that kind of time. So I decided on a trip to Sedona, which lies on the edge of Red Rocks country. The first place I wound up at was a state park overlooking the Coconino National Forest. From this vantage point, one could look down into a wide valley, filled with evergreen trees. It was at the park that I also learned about the "Red Rocks pass" that was required to enter this gorgeous piece of Earth. Given the short time I had available, a pass was not very practical. Instead, I decided to venture down the long winding road into the valley below and see Sedona. Along the way, I discovered a healthy number of little secluded lodges people could stay at. For the most part, all of them looked nice and cozy. After a fair amount of driving, I eventually found myself going down Sedona's main street. Driving to the end of town, I stopped to check out the scenery. Sedona turned out to be a fairly small town, with a lot of tourist shops, that sets nestled among a collection of huge red eroded peaks. It's a geologist's playground to be certain. I can see why travelers get so excited about coming here. I only wish I had more time to stay and explore. But, I had to be content with a few pictures and a trip to several of the stores to see what the local themes were. Someday, I intend to go back and spend a few more days. |
