CALIFORNIA - MONTEREY - July 30, 2002
The Monterey Bay aquarium. People had been telling me about this place for years, but up until now, I have never bothered to visit. Taking a look around, I discovered that the area around the aquarium has become overly "tourist-ified". Loads of trendy little franchised cafes and t-shirt shops. Oh, well. -- On to the fish. The Monterey Bay aquarium has a truely impressive facility, loaded with all sorts of marine creatures. I don't say this lightly, because I have been spoiled by the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. I particularly liked the shallow tank where kids could pet the rays. However, the display that really captivated me was the jellyfish exhibit. Jellies, jellies, jellies. All different kinds. They were beautiful and they slowly drifted around in elegent, undulating patterns. I think most people find them mesmerizing, and mysterious. Apart from the jellyfish, there were a number of other more fishy attractions which were highly entertaining and educational.
